Augmented Reality as a Learning Tool is Not so Farfetch’d

Chances are, you, your friend, or maybe even your kid has been swept up by the newly-released, augmented reality game, Pokémon Go. If, not, you’ve surely seen hordes of people circled around seemingly arbitrary public places, phone in hand. What could be dismissed as an overly-hyped game, may actually have the potential to change the way we learn. Read More…

Communication IS the Conversation: 21st Century Pedagogy That Works

Did you know that of 93% of employers surveyed believe the ability to think critically, communicate clearly, and solve complex problems are skills more important than an undergraduate degree? That’s why soft skills are listed as the most sought after skill-set by employers. However, fewer than 3 in 10 employers felt recent college grads were adequately prepared in the area of critical thinking. How can instructors address this skill gap? The answer is easy: with MindTap.

On March 10-11, Cengage Learning hosted the “Communication IS the Conversation: 21st Century Pedagogy That Works” event in San Francisco to highlight MindTap as a learning tool that equips students with transferable communication skills for success in the classroom and beyond. Fourteen Communication educators from across the country came together to learn about the power of MindTap; a unique student-centered, discipline-focused learning solution. Read More…

Exploring Where Art Education is Headed

The ArtisTECH Talk, centered around Art Education, took place at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina on February 25th. The event was a huge success. Art History and Appreciation educators joined forces to learn about new ways to engage students, enhance student success, and improve efficiency in their daily lives.

The event kicked off with an enthralling presentation from Digital Educator, Bridgett McGowen-Hawkins, to get instructors excited about Art Education. After, instructors learned first-hand about our digital learning solution, MindTap. Cengage Learning created MindTap for Art with both the student and instructor in mind. In Art History and Art Appreciation, an image needs to tell the student a lot of information at once. That’s why MindTap was created with text that surrounds the image so students can get the information they need, when they need it. Instructors can rest assured that Cengage Learning has their back! Insights From College Students: The “Draw Your Day” Activity

The scope of a student’s life often measures beyond academics. More often than not, there are an assortment of additional responsibilities that hinder the student’s ability to solely focus on school work. These factors range from working a part-time job to raising a family. For these reasons, it’s important for Cengage Learning to align with the students’ lives and be a learning tool that can be used to fit their academic needs.

In order to better understand the life of a student, Cengage Learning led a focus group where they asked eighteen students to participate in a Draw-Your-Day activity where students draw their days from start to finish. The purpose of this activity was to see how and when students study given their already busy lives. Of the eighteen students surveyed, no two responses were exactly the same.
