Career Online High School Helps Non-Traditional Student Frances Ramos on the Path to a New Career

Frances Ramos was in her early 70s and wanted to move into a career in healthcare. Aplia Associated with Higher Course Grades in Biology

Online self-directed and self-paced learning is becoming increasingly popular. However, little is known about the relationship between the use of such online learning tools and classroom success. The goal of
the current study, conducted by The Research Group at the University of California, Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science, was to determine if student use of a specific digital learning product developed by Cengage Learning, Aplia for Biology, was related to academic achievement in the course in which it was used.

A total of twenty instructors agreed to participate, 10 in the “treatment” group using Aplia for Biology and 10 in the “comparison” group using the same textbooks, but without the use of Aplia for Biology.

Engagement Services: Educational Services Support Quest to Engage and Retain Students

Changes in the evolving higher education landscape have spawned institutional and instructional needs in a new area—educational services. In a 2013 survey conducted for Cengage Learning, two-thirds of faculty participants noted the importance of services in their adoption decision. Not surprisingly, the number one desire cited was “help increasing student motivation, preparedness, engagement, and retention.” The link between engagement and student success has been demonstrated in decades of research, so finding new ways to engage students is important, albeit challenging. Today it is increasingly vital as institutions—faced with economic pressures, completion-based funding, and a job skills gap—have an even higher stake in enrolling new students, moving them efficiently through the curriculum, keeping them engaged so they persist and graduate, and arming them with the skills that employers demand.

Cengage Learning’s CourseMate brings course concepts to life with interactive learning, study, and exam preparation tools that support the printed textbook, including an integrated eBook, glossaries, flashcards, quizzes, videos, and more. Using a quasi-experimental design, using a before (“control group”) and after (“test group”) comparison, the performance of CourseMate student users (the “test” group) was compared to the historical performance of students at the test site prior to the use of CourseMate (the “control” group).

What Students Say they Need in Order to Become More Engaged in Class

With the many benefits to technology in the classroom, some instructors may still question how to go about using these advancements to increase student engagement. Whatever your choice, it’s clear that students benefit from digital technology in the classroom. In a recent survey by Cengage Learning of over one thousand students and instructors, 80% of college students say that the move towards implementing digital technologies in the classroom has increased their academic performance and 77% even say it has improved their engagement with their courses.
