Q&A on Parental Leave Policy with Ken Carson

Q&A with Ken Carson, Chief People Officer at Cengage, on our new parental leave policy. Q: Cengage recently announced an update to its parental leave policy. Can you give a high level overview? A: The arrival of a child–whether by birth, adoption or surrogacy–represents the start of a huge undertaking for parents. Our parental leave policy will now provide 12 weeks of fully-paid leave for all parents–women and men–provided they are full time employees with at least 1 year of service with us. This is a meaningful increase from the prior policy of 8 weeks of paid leave for the primary Read More…

On Openness and Learning

I attended OpenEd for the first time in 2008. I dug up some notes from the event and rediscovered an observation by Yoshimi Fukuhara of Keio University. He asserted that Open Courseware (now generally referred to as Open Educational Resources or OER) is often too focused on content and not enough of learning design and the learning experience.

OER: Content vs. Design

While openness for its own sake has practical and philosophical value, there is broad consensus that content in an educational context (be it open or otherwise) is only as valuable as the outcomes it contributes to. The Read More…

Tech Support Gets Personal at Cengage Learning

We’ve all been through it: you make the dreaded call to tech support and endure long wait times, confusing phone trees, and agents who seem to lack empathy and urgency when it comes to resolving your issue.  It can leave you more frustrated than the issue that prompted you to contacted Customer Support in the first place. Communication IS the Conversation: 21st Century Pedagogy That Works

Did you know that of 93% of employers surveyed believe the ability to think critically, communicate clearly, and solve complex problems are skills more important than an undergraduate degree? On March 10-11, Cengage Learning hosted the “Communication IS the Conversation: 21st Century Pedagogy That Works” event in San Francisco to highlight MindTap as a learning tool that equips students with transferable communication skills for success in the classroom and beyond. Fourteen Communication educators from across the country came together to learn about the power of MindTap; a unique student-centered, discipline-focused learning solution. Read More…
