Despite dramatic rain and floods, Cengage Learning and TeamUP, a part of Cengage Learning, participated in the 2015 NISOD conference held in May in Austin, Texas. NISOD (National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development) “is a membership organization committed to promoting and celebrating excellence in teaching, learning, and leadership at community and technical colleges.” Twelve hundred registrants heard popular speakers and learned about innovative programs, trends, and research. ‘Technology’ was part of everyone’s conversation. One speaker repeated a version of William Gibson’s quote, “The future is already here. It’s just not very evenly distributed,” and every instructor in the room nodded agreement.
Because of our new partnership with NISOD (members receive a 50% discount on the TeamUP Professional Development Portal!), TeamUP was especially excited to share its online Professional Development Portal during a breakout session. Led by Executive Director Melissa Zantello, along with TeamUP staff Maggi Miller and Ann Wolf, the session was filled with an audience of faculty and administrators seeking ideas for supporting their colleagues. Our activities and information led to a lively discussion about the challenges faced by schools wanting to provide access to conferences, workshops, webinars, and networking. Participants cited scheduling problems, concerns for adjuncts and expense as major issues. They were excited to learn we offered recorded conferences, energizing self-paced modules, and practical webinars on current, relevant topics in an online format.
Our roundtable session explored the topic in a more intimate setting where instructors were able to ask questions specific to their schools. We were able to offer access to a sample collection of the Portal so they were able to take more than handouts back to their campuses.
Even our exhibit led by Kirsten Carson, Marketing Director, invited participants to take a look at the Portal online. The TeamUP Portal became a buzzword at NISOD!
We enjoyed Austin hospitality and made new friends as we shared umbrellas and looked out windows showcasing water all around us. Spirits were not dampened so we look forward to strengthening our connection with NISOD and its members.
