From August 22-25, Cengage Learning’s Sociology team had the opportunity to attend the American Sociological Association’s Annual Conference. Held in Chicago this year, the conference and many of its sessions focused on the theme of “sexualities in the social world.” Meanwhile, we had a great time engaging with sociologists and educators, discussing topics and trends in the discipline while also showing the latest updates to MindTap for Sociology, our engaging (and adaptive) solution for the Intro course.
In-booth demos garnered interest from educators and students alike. Our no-book booth was an unprecedented digital model. Educators enjoyed this model because it afforded them the ability to fully embrace MindTap 21st Century Pedagogy. As teachers have a harder time getting students to not only buy, but also read textbooks, MindTap offers a fresh alternative to increase student engagement.
Focus groups continued to push the envelope as educators learned from each other about new ways to integrate technology into their classrooms. Educators reviewed the future iterations of MindTap with a frame of utilizing technology as a way to supplement student learning. On August 20, Cengage Learning hosted a Talk and Tapas event with educators that attended focus groups and paired them with students to interact with MindTap. Those that attended gave impactful feedback and were excited to get their hands on the product.
Sessions this year were a breath of fresh air as they spanned interesting topics such as Modern Romance, Sex and Gender, Inequality amongst minority communities, and more. The Plenary session featured comedian and actor Aziz Ansari and NYU sociologist Eric Klinenberg who co-authored Modern Romance. The Plenary session focused on how technology is quickly changing the ways of societal courtship with the advent of dating sites and apps. As we see the growth of technology in many arenas, new doors open whether for love, education, or something else entirely. The session was fascinating, comical, and well-received by all. Definitely an ASA to remember!
Last, but certainly not least, Cengage Learning sponsored a Reception celebrating the accomplishments of renowned Sociologist, Earl Babbie. During the reception, Earl reflected on his life accomplishments through quick wit, humor, and great stories about how he came to be a Sociologist (spoiler alert: he had planned to be a Nuclear Physicist). We are happy Earl is a part of the Cengage Learning family and commend him for all of his great contributions to the field of Sociology!
