An important aspect of the content creating process (whether it be a video, article, or blog post) is actually sharing it, often through social media networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. However, spreading your message through social media effectively can be easier said than done, due to what may appear to be an unwritten set of rules and guidelines that makes some posts successful, and others not. Here are some ways you can effectively spread your message through social media!
Creating Your Title
The title to your content is incredibly important! It’s the first thing a reader sees, and what will hopefully draw them in to view your content. However, overly dramatic titles (ex: “YOU WON’T BELIEVE WHAT THIS BLOGGER HAS TO SAY ABOUT SOCIAL MEDIA!!”) can come across as desperate. Instead, keep your title simple, descriptive, and engaging: “Cengage Learning Student Blogger Discusses Social Media.” Tasteful titles that let readers know what to expect can take your post a long way.
Make sure to use hashtags to your advantage! They are (without a doubt) utilized on Twitter the most, but can still make an impact on sites such as Instagram and Facebook. Before posting, research hashtags related to the topics covered in your content, and use ones that are the most widely used. In addition, use best judgment when hashtagging. Not every single word in your post needs to be hashtagged!
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is a process of using different tools to help your site rank higher in search engines such as Google or Bing. Sites such as YouTube, Pinterest, Tumblr, and WordPress, you can add tags to posts, which can help optimize your content to be discovered. This concept is very similar to those principles discussed above about hashtags.
Timing plays an important role in the effectiveness of your post. Posting your article on Facebook at 3AM (when most people are asleep) will have a much smaller reach than an article posted at 4:30 PM. Make a coordinated effort to make posts on multiple social networks around the same period of time. It’s important to pace yourself when posting. If you’re posting the same link every hour, those in your social networks are likely to gloss over it, or even become annoyed at the same content flooding their newsfeed.
Encourage your audience to further share your content! Many YouTubers encourage their followers to “Like, Comment, Share, and Subscribe” to their channels to maximize their reach. Pushing engagement from your social media connections can only help to further extend the reach of your content.
