Mathematics Journey with Enhanced WebAssign® Saves Time, Provides Better Service, and Improves Engagement and Test Scores

For twenty-eight years, Anna Cox has been teaching all levels of mathematics from numerical skills through calculus at Kellogg Community College in Battle Creek, Michigan. As an innovator always looking for new ways to use technology to engage students, Anna has taken a unique approach to teaching her courses. Anna’s class is currently taught using what she describes as a “hybrid flipped” model. On their time, students watch videos and take notes on a corresponding worksheet; then, in class, Anna summarizes the material, then spends the majority of class time on problem solving activities, which generally take place at the classroom’s whiteboards.

After learning more about Mathematics Journey with Enhanced WebAssign during the the 2014 American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges meeting, Anna decided to pilot it in her Intermediate Algebra course. Once she began the pilot semester, Anna found that the solution was a natural fit for her hybrid flipped classroom.

Student Exceeds Her Own Expectations with Enhanced WebAssign

Sabrina Green says she studies every chance she gets—the trick is finding the chance. A full-time student at Borough of Manhattan Community College, she also works afternoons and evenings. Having a full schedule can be stressful, and adding a math course to the mix raises the anxiety level even higher for many, including Sabrina. Thanks to Enhanced WebAssign (EWA), which provided online guidance in elementary algebra whenever she needed it, her fears dissipated and she earned a better grade (by far) than she expected.

Enhanced WebAssign Helps Engineering Students Stay Focused and Better Understand Difficult Concepts

Debarghya Bhandary and Ajith Shajan, both engineering majors at Columbus State University, share the common goal of soon transferring to Georgia Tech to complete their
studies. In fact, Debarghya has already been accepted to Georgia Tech and plans to begin studies there in fall 2014. Where they differ is how tech savvy they consider themselves to be: Ajith admits that he “knows the basics” while Debarghya is much more advanced in his familiarity with technology.
For both students, tough science-based courses are the norm for them at Columbus State. Both are taking Linear Algebra, which includes Enhanced WebAssign as the online homework component, along with digital access to Ron Larson’s Linear Algebra text. Both Ajith and Debarghya liked the fact that Enhanced WebAssign allows you to go back and review and practice questions you don’t understand until you get it right, which helped them both prepare for quizzes and do well.
