Enhanced WebAssign Efficacy

Student Ambassador Finds Enhanced WebAssign® “Taylor-Made” to Help with Math Skills

Taylor Dougherty’s first digital learning experience was in pre-calculus as a college freshman, when she was “crazy busy” with a full course load and a full-time job. She’s a conscientious student, but felt intimidated because she doesn’t like mathematics. Enhanced WebAssign® (EWA), which was required for homework and tests, proved to be a blessing. “I had a difficult time understanding my professor, so I relied on Enhanced WebAssign a lot,” she recalls. “It really helped me with the skills I needed to get through the course.” Taylor takes online courses whenever possible, as she appreciates the flexibility to carve Read More…

Innovative Developmental Math Solution Improves Educational Outcomes at Borough of Manhattan Community College

As a full-time mathematics lecturer at CUNY BMCC, Professor Dale Dawes (who teaches everything from developmental mathematics through calculus) sees math anxiety in students young and old, in all of his classes.

In the past, Dawes struggled to identify struggling students, and then find time to provide individualized help to each of them. Furthermore, the process of grading mathematics assignments was taking up much of the time he’d prefer to spend giving those students the one-on-one attention that they need.

But now, thanks to Enhanced WebAssign® (EWA), Dawes has more freedom to offer his students individualized assistance. EWA is a cloud-based learning and feedback tool designed to promote critical thinking, automate the grading process, and provide students and instructors with real-time performance evaluations and results. Dawes, who uses EWA across all of his Mathematics courses, is a devoted user of EWA due to the flexibility it offers—from both the student and instructor perspectives. For instance, instructors can implement as much or as little of their content & rules in it, while students have a broad choice of ways to learn the data.

Students Seek Help for Math Anxiety and Find it with Enhanced WebAssign

Overcoming fear is certainly not an official subject major at the City University of New York, Borough of Manhattan Community College (CUNY BMCC), but for a handful of developmental math students there, it sure felt like it. For many students, who suffer from what’s often called “math anxiety,” the fear of failing yet another math class was real. Skipping class due to math anxiety is not uncommon for college students who have histories with mathematics struggles. However, the developmental math course is an important requirement on the path to graduation and enrollment at four-year schools… and thus, passing the course is of great importance.

Cengage Learning’s Enhanced WebAssign (EWA), a cloud-based learning and feedback tool designed to promote critical thinking, automate the grading process, and provide students and instructors with real-time performance evaluations and results, has helped many of CUNY BMCC’s students navigate the rough waters mathematics can often produce.

Mathematics Journey with Enhanced WebAssign® Saves Time, Provides Better Service, and Improves Engagement and Test Scores

For twenty-eight years, Anna Cox has been teaching all levels of mathematics from numerical skills through calculus at Kellogg Community College in Battle Creek, Michigan. As an innovator always looking for new ways to use technology to engage students, Anna has taken a unique approach to teaching her courses. Anna’s class is currently taught using what she describes as a “hybrid flipped” model. On their time, students watch videos and take notes on a corresponding worksheet; then, in class, Anna summarizes the material, then spends the majority of class time on problem solving activities, which generally take place at the classroom’s whiteboards.

After learning more about Mathematics Journey with Enhanced WebAssign during the the 2014 American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges meeting, Anna decided to pilot it in her Intermediate Algebra course. Once she began the pilot semester, Anna found that the solution was a natural fit for her hybrid flipped classroom.

Enhanced WebAssign Student Survey Feedback

Seventy eight students using Enhanced WebAssign® at the University of West Florida and the University of Georgia were given a survey to collect their feedback and impressions. Students were enrolled in Introductory Statistics, Elements of Statistics, and Mathematics Modeling courses.

Overall, these students would give Enhanced WebAssign high marks; 95% of them would grade their experience with Enhanced WebAssign with an “A” or “B”.

Student Exceeds Her Own Expectations with Enhanced WebAssign

Sabrina Green says she studies every chance she gets—the trick is finding the chance. A full-time student at Borough of Manhattan Community College, she also works afternoons and evenings. Having a full schedule can be stressful, and adding a math course to the mix raises the anxiety level even higher for many, including Sabrina. Thanks to Enhanced WebAssign (EWA), which provided online guidance in elementary algebra whenever she needed it, her fears dissipated and she earned a better grade (by far) than she expected.

Bridge Program with EWA a Success for Incoming MSU Students

At Michigan State University, math professors wanted to give students the opportunity to get ahead before they even started. For students who have been newly admitted
to Michigan State and have been placed into Intermediate Algebra, MSU offers the opportunity to take Freshman Math Initiative (FMI) Summer Transition Program: a summer bridge course that helps students acquire the necessary skills to advance and successfully complete College Algebra in their first semester.

Faculty’s vision was student success without undue burden on the student. Another program goal was to enable students to be exposed to a college course and develop the academic skills needed to succeed in their first year of college. Because success of this program is highly dependent on student engagement, participation, and effort, MSU adopted Enhanced WebAssign® as the primary method of delivering the course content.

In this Case Study, you’ll learn about the positive outcomes that MSU has seen as a result of instituting this program, including improved exam scores and strong numbers of students who advanced to the next required math class or completed their math requirement.

Closing the Gap to Conceptual Understanding

Insights from the 2015 American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) conference

In an effort to better understand the needs and challenges of Physics instructors, Cengage Learning conducted research with attendees of the 2015 American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) conference. In addition to needs and challenges, the research was designed to understand how instructors are using technology as well as how it has impacted their style of teaching. A total of 12 AAPT attendees were interviewed. The participants taught all levels of Physics and represented a wide variety of 2- and 4-year institutions. The interviews revealed that Physics instructors are struggling with building critical thinking skills with students, but believe that technology can aid in increasing student engagement.

Enhanced WebAssign Helps Intimidated Student Get Excited about Math

A few years ago, Columbus State University graduate Danielle Washington wouldn’t have said that she liked math. In fact, she’d have said just the opposite. But thanks to a positive experience at the Georgia institution, made possible by a relevant course, a dedicated instructor, and a full-featured online learning tool — Enhanced WebAssign (EWA) — Danielle made a 180-degree turn in her attitude.
