Enhanced WebAssign

Thanks to Enhanced WebAssign, Busy Student has Better Study Habits—and a Good Grade

Zak Kucera, a full-time sophomore at Northwestern University, knows what it’s like to feel frazzled. With short, intense quarters packed with classes like microeconomics, monopoly and antitrust, and geography, staying focused and on top of his studies is essential in order to not fall behind, and then find himself without the time necessary to catch up.

For his essential calculus course, the required materials included Essential Calculus from Cengage Learning, as well as Enhanced WebAssign. Zak found that he enjoyed Enhanced WebAssign right off the bat, as he usually does well with online programs. He felt that the program was not only a time saver but helped him master the concepts and retain what he was learning. At the end of the course, Zak ended up with an A-, which made him very happy.

Enhanced WebAssign Helps Engineering Students Stay Focused and Better Understand Difficult Concepts

Debarghya Bhandary and Ajith Shajan, both engineering majors at Columbus State University, share the common goal of soon transferring to Georgia Tech to complete their
studies. In fact, Debarghya has already been accepted to Georgia Tech and plans to begin studies there in fall 2014. Where they differ is how tech savvy they consider themselves to be: Ajith admits that he “knows the basics” while Debarghya is much more advanced in his familiarity with technology.
For both students, tough science-based courses are the norm for them at Columbus State. Both are taking Linear Algebra, which includes Enhanced WebAssign as the online homework component, along with digital access to Ron Larson’s Linear Algebra text. Both Ajith and Debarghya liked the fact that Enhanced WebAssign allows you to go back and review and practice questions you don’t understand until you get it right, which helped them both prepare for quizzes and do well.

Five Ways to Elevate Learning with Enhanced WebAssign®

Contributor: Kimberly Benien, Wharton County Junior College (Wharton, Texas).

Whether I am designing a face-to-face course or an online course, student engagement is a top priority. Experience and reflection has shown me that students who are engaged in class and in the content are more likely to develop their own understanding and successfully transfer the learning to a more difficult concept, and eventually the next course. Technology helps me achieve my goal: to engage students where they are with technologies that they will use. Remember, only when students find value in it will they use it.

Enhanced WebAssign Allows Student to Study Around her Schedule, Save Money, and Improve Skills

With the goal of attending Texas Tech in Lubbock in her future, Victoria knows she would like to earn a degree in engineering, and feels that by selecting mechanical engineering as her specialty, more career opportunities will come her way. Currently she is taking some of her math and science prerequisites, like general chemistry and calculus, while working part time for her father, studying, and making time for exercise and fun, including kick boxing.

In her calculus course, the professor would go over notes and questions in class, but the majority of the course was online, via Enhanced WebAssign. She considers herself to be somewhat tech savvy, and she enjoys her classes. Though she was surprised at first, she ended up doing well in her class and enjoying
the use of Enhanced WebAssign due to its ease of use, flexibility and affordability.

Future Veterinarian Aces Calculus with Support from Enhanced WebAssign®

Suzanne Costner recently took Calculus at her alma mater, Cleveland Community College in North Carolina, as a pre-requisite for veterinary school at North Carolina State University. She and her fellow students meet with the course instructor every Monday to ask questions and go over the previous week’s homework problems, which students complete online, on their own time, in Enhanced WebAssign (EWA).

Suzanne enjoys being a student, studies hard, likes using computers, and, not surprisingly, has excelled in academics. She works during the week, so studies primarily on weekends and when she finds spare hours on weekdays. Accustomed to using online resources, Suzanne expected EWA to be helpful, especially in preparing for quizzes and tests. She wasn’t disappointed, noting that EWA provided more examples and more context than another company’s online math homework solution that she had used previously. Suzanne attributes her strong performance on tests to EWA.

Moving Students from Procrastination to Participation

Guest Contributor: Maureen O’Connor DuPont, California State University San Marcos. One of the biggest challenges that I see my students face is their inability to manage their time well. I teach predominantly remedial Math courses (Pre-Algebra, and Beginning Algebra) at both the local Community College and at California State University San Marcos. The average class size is 45 to 50 students. While most are incoming freshmen, my class population also consists of re-entry students who are trying to get back on track and either start a degree or to complete one that they may have abandoned years ago. Future Nurse Anesthetist Credits Enhanced WebAssign® for Success in Math

A’lea Hathcock is a full-time student majoring in pre-nursing at Columbus State University (CSU) in Columbus, Georgia, on her way to becoming a nurse anesthetist. Her days are filled with classes and her evenings — as well as pockets of time between classes — are often spent studying.

In a recent term, one of the positive aspects of studying was the opportunity to use Enhanced WebAssign®, which was a required homework resource in her Mathematical Modeling course. Enhanced WebAssign gave her a lot of assistance and practice, which helped the concepts stick. Additionally, Enhanced WebAssign helped A’lea build her study skills, as well as critical thinking skills that will serve her beyond her math courses. She appreciated EWA’s relevance, and also credits it with helping her manage her time.

Enhanced WebAssign Takes the Heat Off Calculus Homework

Brandon Arrowood got a jump-start to his academic career, entering Cleveland Community College through his high school’s early college program. Brandon made his goal graduating with his high school diploma and associate’s degree simultaneously. A volunteer firefighter, Brandon plans to major in Chemistry at Western Carolina University, and pursue a career that involves supporting firefighters. Brandon uses Enhanced WebAssign for his Calculus course.

Though he’s always been a fan of math, Brandon finds that the challenges of a full-time student demand a better way to approach assignments. When college classes overlapped with his volunteer firefighter training, Brandon would pull all-nighters to manage all his responsibilities. Key to his math study time, says Brandon, was ensuring he had the concepts down pat.

As part of Brandon’s Calculus course, Enhanced WebAssign brought him closer to conceptual understanding than other homework solutions that simply drill students for answers. Besides being a timesaver, Enhanced WebAssign helped Brandon grasp Calculus concepts and work independently using his own critical-thinking skills. Brandon reports he will pass Calculus with nearly a 100 average grade.

Enhanced WebAssign® Guides Calculus Student to an “A+”

Zunair Khimani loves being a college student. A junior taking classes at two different institutions, Zunair also works part time as a pharmacy tech and plans to become a pharmacist. His current school schedule includes physics, world literature, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology — and his favorite course, calculus. “I love math, and calculus is really challenging,” says Zunair. “The instructor is awesome, and makes calculus fun.”

Fun doesn’t mean easy, so Zunair is pleased that Enhanced WebAssign® (EWA) is required in the course. EWA is an online homework system that enhances problems from Zunair’s Cengage Learning textbook with immediate feedback, tutorials, and Watch It video solutions that use different values from the assigned problems. “I think EWA is one of the most helpful things I have ever used. I actually took calculus previously at University of Houston and got a ‘D.’ Now that I am using Enhanced WebAssign, I have an ‘A+.’”
