What do students expect when they enter their college classrooms (on campus or online)? What piques their interest, boosts their confidence, and helps them feel engaged in the learning process?

At Phi Theta Kappa‘s 2014 NerdNation convention, we talked with numerous students about their college experience. Among these questions, we asked: What do you think is an essential part of the classroom experience?

In the following videos, you’ll hear many of their responses. For some, it’s about building connections with their instructors and the other students in their classes. Others feed off the passion and enthusiasm that their instructors show for their subjects. Still others find that group projects and hands-on learning experiences get them actively involved in the learning process.  Take a moment to listen to what they had to say, and consider what else you might do to provide an engaging classroom experience for your students.

How do you help students get the most out of the classroom experience? What strategies work to support student engagement in your courses? Share your ideas in the comments.
