From November 20 to 22, Cengage Learning’s World Languages team attended the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) annual conference. ACTFL took place in San Diego this year with over 700 educational sessions and a variety of formats covering a wide spectrum of the language profession. Cengage Learning had a great time with language professors discussing topics and trends while exhibiting iLrn demos, attending sessions, participating in Focus Groups, and receptions.

In-booth demos were attended by over 50 instructors who learned the different ways they could integrate teaching into a learning solution that fits their students’ needs. Instructor Patti Marinelli of University of South Carolina says that “using online language-learning components is a change in language instruction, and it is working” because “students have to participate the online piece to participate effectively in class”. Review her Cengage Learning “Success Story” to hear more about her experiences.

Focus Groups, focus testing, usability testing and targeted interviews were conducted by our onsite researchers. Educators reviewed features in iLrn like Share It, which is like a social media tool that allows students to do group-work and comment on each other’s’ posts reflecting how they use social media. This helps students as a real-life application: students learn how to practice real-world communication in Spanish. Moreover, we created idea walls to learn about the future of digital learning so we can pave a collaborative learning environment together.

Sessions were thought provoking and insightful. Rick Steves, host and writer of the popular television series, Rick Steves’ Europe, was the keynote speaker. Steves discussed “Developing a Global Perspective through Travel” and how that ties into language learning. There were over seven hundred sessions covering an array of language learning topics.

Cengage Learning “Set Sail” at a reception with Language learning educators. Cengage Learning staff learned from educators about the context of digital learning. Moreover, there was an award ceremony, during which Cengage Learning celebrate Dr. Senta Goertler’s award from ACTFL. It was a great two nights celebrating learning and the hard work of educators!
