As part of Cengage Learning’s continued efforts to support women in STEM, we teamed up with She Geeks Out to host a fun night of learning and networking in our Boston headquarters.  She Geeks Out supports a dynamic community of women in STEM by providing a welcoming network, mentorship opportunities, educational resources and encouragement to proudly fly their geek flags.

The program featured three speakers on topics ranging from the importance of math for a computer science major and different ways to define “scrappy,” to the components of a successful engagement strategy.

Luba Sakharuk, SDLC Process Manager and Agile Coach at Cengage Learning spoke about the role math plays in computer science careers and pointed out that a computer science degree can open many doors in addition to programming.

Amy Chenault, Experience Architect at IBM Interactive and Instructor at General Assembly & Girls Develop It, inspired the crowd by pointing out that user experience is about helping people and making experiences better.  Further, she added that failure is necessary on the journey to mastery.

Finally, Beth Saunders of Beth Saunders Consulting, broke down the many components of an engagement strategy.  She showed the group the engagement pyramid and talked about balancing what you need from people who engage with your organization and understanding what they wish to contribute.

She Geeks Out 2016The event concluded with ample time for networking, so attendees could connect over common interests and careers goals.  Overall, it was a high energy, inspiring evening.  We appreciate everyone who came out to participate and look forward to hosting more meetups in the future!
