At Cengage, we’re committed to shaping the future of higher education — whether it’s helping students prepare for what’s next through guided learning experiences or simplifying your workflow with intuitive teaching tools.
And that’s why we’re proud that Fast Company has named Cengage to its 2026 list of Most Innovative Companies. This recognition highlights the impact of our continued investment in scalable, learner-centered innovation to support the college classroom.
Our AI-powered Student Assistant is designed to offer discipline-specific learning support, strengthen academic integrity, and enhance critical thinking skills and student confidence.
Scaling guided learning across higher education
When it comes to AI learning tools, Student Assistant sets itself apart from the crowd. We know that quick and easy answers aren’t always the right ones. And shortcuts can undermine long-term learning goals. Rather than simply providing answers, our user-tested Student Assistant encourages critical thinking through guided questions, contextual examples, and course-aligned references. The experience is like working with a personal tutor, helping learners build reasoning skills over time while pursuing course objectives with confidence.
Student Assistant is available across 100+ Cengage higher ed products, with additional products scheduled for launch by the end of April 2026. Embedded directly into Cengage’s Learning Platforms, it serves as an always-available academic guide, helping students clarify complex concepts by drawing directly on trusted Cengage content.
Innovation designed to support growth
So, what really drove our AI innovations? It definitely wasn’t riding the coattails of the latest trends. It’s only because of our higher ed community that this achievement is possible.
We developed Student Assistant through close collaboration with students and educators alike. Student Assistant works to support critical thinking and disciplinary nuance while making content more accessible. As a result, students depend less on instructor intervention or search engine results. This approach ensures that technology enhances the educational experience without replacing essential effort.
Assignment-level controls give instructors flexibility to enable or disable Student Assistant depending on course objectives — preserving academic standards while embracing flexibility. Responsible innovation at Cengage means building tools that instructors trust and institutions adopt with confidence, leading to increased engagement, knowledge, and cross-disciplinary connections.
Equipping faculty with actionable insights
Meaningful innovation in higher education must support instructors as much as students. That’s why we also created the Instructor Assistant (formerly Faculty Insights), which provides near real-time visibility into student engagement trends, knowledge gaps, and potential at-risk learners.
Instructor Assistant also highlights common challenges and offers practical suggestions to keep students on track. Each student has a profile page with strengths, areas for improvement, and a learning plan for targeted support. These insights allow faculty to guide instruction, proactively address common areas of confusion, and intervene earlier when students need support.
Built for disciplinary precision
Different subjects (and learners) require different approaches. And we designed Student Assistant with the flexibility to accommodate. Strengthened through rigorous user testing, Student Assistant offers support tailored across disciplines.
Whether students are analyzing economic trends or solving complex chemistry equations, Student Assistant aligns its guidance with discipline-specific expectations and trusted Cengage content. This ensures that support remains accurate and relevant to students’ subject areas.
Engagement that extends beyond the classroom
Data reveals peak engagement between 4:00 PM and midnight, when many students are studying independently and without assistance from faculty or teacher assistants (TAs). During these critical hours, Student Assistant provides timely support that helps learners persevere through challenging material.
Users actively work through multi-step problems, revisiting challenging concepts and testing their reasoning in a low-pressure environment. Because support is embedded directly within their learning platform, students can immediately connect explanations back to assigned readings, examples, and practice questions. Over time, this reinforces study habits and builds academic independence.
Advancing our mission
For more than 100 years, we’ve been committed to building futures that work. Across our portfolio, Cengage is advancing solutions that combine trusted content, guided experiences, and actionable insights to improve learner success. By understanding the needs of our educators and students, we are fueling the evolution of the classroom experience.
Looking ahead
Recognition from Fast Company is a reflection of our sustained commitment. It’s an important milestone, but not the end of the journey. As we celebrate this achievement, our focus remains on what matters most: helping every learner gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to succeed in the classroom, in their careers, and in life.
