Do your students struggle to understand the meaning behind data in order to become statistical thinkers? Are they overwhelmed by complex calculations or data analysis tools?
You’re not alone! We often hear from Statistics instructors that one of their biggest challenges is turning students into statistical thinkers.
The Statistical Analysis and Learning Tool (SALT) will address this challenge and enable learning in an easy-to-use tool created for students. SALT will be integrated in WebAssign courses* and accessible for free outside of WebAssign.
*SALT is available only for the latest edition of the titles specified below. Be sure to upgrade your title if you’d like to use SALT.
SALT is designed by Statisticians, for Statisticians
After years of development in partnership with statistics educators and in-class testing by instructors and students, SALT will be incorporated into WebAssign questions.
Access Seamlessly
- Once clicked, data sets within applicable WebAssign questions automatically import into SALT for students to manipulate.
- Instructors can choose to access SALT on a standalone website outside of WebAssign to quickly access for instructional and testing purposes.
- Once their course has ended, students can access SALT on a standalone website for use in their subsequent courses or projects.
Fuel Student Learning
- Dynamic graphics and a modern interface with easy-to-use controls help students intuitively manipulate and visualize data sets. Thus, enabling students to gain a deeper understanding of graphing, descriptive statistics, distributions, regression, and more.
- Interesting, relevant data sets engage students and help them understand where Statistics applies in real life. Keep in mind, you can also use your own data sets!
Which Titles and Questions include SALT?
Approximately 33% of existing Statistics questions in WebAssign automatically include SALT, and more are continually added over time. Questions will include SALT if:
- The problem involves a statistical function supported by SALT
- The problem involves both computational and interpretive parts. Questions that are purely computational or conceptual without a computational aspect will not include SALT for pedagogical reasons
SALT is available for the following titles:
- Cengage, Statistics by Learning Objective, 1e
- Brase/Brase, Understanding Basic Statistics, 8e
- Brase/Brase, Understandable Statistics: Concepts and Methods, 12e
- Devore, Probability and Statistics for Engineering and the Sciences, 9e
- Mendenhall/Beaver/Beaver, Introduction to Probability and Statistics, 15e
- Peck/Short, Statistics: Learning from Data, 2e
- Peck/Olsen/Short, Introduction to Statistics and Data Analysis, 6e
- Utts/Heckard, Mind on Statistics, 5e
- Utts/Heckard, Mind on Statistics, 6e
- Rosner, Fundamentals of Biostatistics, 8e
How to Add SALT to Your Courses
SALT questions are readily available in WebAssign and can be identified with the ‘.S’ tag in the Question Browser. Contact your Account Executive if you’d like a full list of questions that now include SALT.
